Choosing the dog that best fits in your family that has young children can feel utterly daunting. The what ifs mount in the mind like the laundry we all don’t have time for.

We’re here to help with six dog breed suggestions based on our experience as foster dog pawrents and dog sitters. Forget the trend; find a dog with the temperament, size, energy level and breed traits that help everyone, people and pups alike, thrive.

Every family is unique, just like the people (and pups) in them. So while the breeds below are often wonderful with children, doing your own research and talking to the breeder or rescue about a dog’s specific personality are great steps to take in your dog pawrent journey.

The notes below are based on personal experiences and opinions. Always consult your veterinarian or a qualified professional for informed recommendations.

Bernese Mountain Dog

Often nicknamed “nanny dogs,” Bernese Mountain Dogs are gentle giants with a heart of gold. They’re kind, doting, and durable enough to keep up with kids who love to romp around outside. They tend to have shorter lifespans compared to many other breeds, something families should thoughtfully consider.

Dachshund

Sweet, relaxed, and loyal, Dachshunds often bond deeply with their people. They make loving companions for families who want a smaller dog with a big personality.

Because Dachshunds have long, delicate backs, teaching children how to handle them gently, to avoid rough play and to not lift them incorrectly are important, so this dog may not be well suited to young infants.

Goldendoodle

Sweet, loyal, energetic, and incredibly forgiving, Goldendoodles are often great playmates for children. They’re happy to join in for playtime but just as happy to curl up on the couch afterward.

For families with young children, a medium size (around 20 pounds) or larger can be safer for the dog.

Golden Retriever

Patient, reliable, and famously kind, Golden Retrievers are classics for a reason. They’re energetic enough for active families and forgiving enough for noisy homes where life gets wonderfully messy.

Cocker Spaniel

Affectionate, loyal, and happiest when cuddled up with their favorite humans, Cocker Spaniels bring sweetness and comfort into a home. They’re often very people-oriented and make excellent companions for kids.

Labrador Retriever

Labs are joyful, outgoing, sweet-natured dogs who tend to love everyone they meet. They’re sturdy enough for active families and good-natured enough to handle the unpredictability of life with children.

Final Thoughts

The best family dog is one whose personality and needs realistically match your reality: your space, your schedule, your energy level, and the ages and personalities of your children. Breed tendencies can help guide you, but every dog is

ree

an individual.
