Dog parents, let’s make life easier by planning ahead!

I know—ugh, but trust me, your future self (and your pup) will thank you. Deep breath, big sigh, and let’s set ourselves up for a year with more time for dog adventures and cuddles.

Here’s your checklist of things to tackle now, so you can “set it, and forget it.”

  1. Schedule your dog’s annual vet check-up.

For senior dogs, consider scheduling two check-ups (every six months). As our pups age, health issues can come up quickly, and early detection can make a huge difference.

  2. Set up auto-ship for food, treats, and supplements.

Most services allow you to pause or adjust shipments as needed. Imagine this: after a long day, you realize you’re out of dog food, and the store is closed. Then you remember—your auto-ship has your pup’s food ready and waiting at your doorstep!

(Bonus tip: Periodically check to ensure your dog food’s formulation or brand ownership hasn’t changed.)

Check out some of the food and treats we’ve researched for quality in production and sourcing as well as transparency and ethics.

  3. Plan your dog-friendly vacations.

You don’t need to travel far for an amazing, pup-friendly getaway! Start by exploring dog-friendly hotels and vacation rentals. Since pet-friendly options can be limited, planning ahead increases the chance that your whole family (four-legged included) can join the fun.

  4. Set reminders for bath time.

How often your pup needs a bath depends on their coat type, activity level, skin conditions, and odor tendencies. Thick or double-coated breeds, for example, might need less frequent baths. Check with your vet to determine the ideal bathing schedule for your dog, and add it to your calendar!

  5. Book grooming appointments for the year.

Groomers’ appointments fill up quickly—especially during peak seasons. Save yourself the stress by booking appointments in advance. Don’t forget to specify everything you want done, so your groomer can account for all needed time.

  6. Schedule reminders to wash your dog’s bedding.

Opinions vary on how often you should wash your dog’s bed—some recommend weekly, others biweekly. Choose a schedule that works for you, and stick to it.

  7. Set your training goals, and plan your schedule.

Whether you’re working with a trainer or practicing at home or both, consistency is key. Research classes for specific skills or behaviors, and register early to ensure that they fit your schedule.

Working on at-home training? It doesn’t have to take long! Short, focused sessions can still build routines on which your dog will thrive. Put the time on your calendar, so you don’t forget.

Have an amazing year, Sit Pretty Pup pack!
